Mos Eisley Music's 2015 in Rock

Hydromedusa - Hydromedusa

After making waves with some smaller releases including an excellent s/t 7" single Hydromedusa from Adelaide just put out their full-length debut on tym records. If you're into heavy and rough rock and roll sounds there is simply no way around this one. Right from the start with the old school riffs and fierce vocals you just know that this is no joke - this is a truly dangerous brand of rock that doesn't take any prisoners. The band cuts right to the point but also likes to play some intense jams here and there. So as much as some tracks seem to be that kind of music to speed down the highway you will also find some psychedelic flavoured vibes in tunes like "Sew" or "Matter Of Time". more...

Smokey Angle Shades - Shades Of Joy

London's Smokey Angle Eyes are the smoothest blend of country and soul sounds that currently walks the contemporary music landscape. After their recent take on a Jimi Hendrix tune the new album "Shades Of Joy" is now out on Impossible Ark Records and available on vinyl and digital. There are great vocal harmonies, some nice rock licks and a beautiful vibe going through all 11 tracks. It's all captured by some impressive and on point songwriting. It shows in the simplicity of the songs - it's about finding the exciting and little things in an otherwise standard song structure you've heard so many times before - and let me just say that this band is doing an incredible job at this.  Thus it is really hard to pick one standout track to feature below. Still I won't let the gospel/country character of the opener "Empty Carriage" fool you (though it is a great tune) - from bluesy soul tracks like "Everybody Knows" to uptempo acoustic rock tunes like "Had About Enough" - you will find it all on this record and it will grow on you in an addictive way...more

Demon Head - Ride The Wilderness

You just have to love what Denmark's Demon Head are offering on their recent doom rock release. "Ride The Wilderness" is a tribute to the retro rock sound and yet such a unique piece of contemporary rock'n'roll music in itself. The doom character on this record doesn't evolve through dark or atmospheric moods but more through a Uncle Acid kinda grooving vibes. And without sounding primitive or predictable the songs are surprisingly catchy. So apart from riffs and rumbling rhythms you will also find on point songwriting on "Ride The Wilderness".The number of bands trying to archieve this sound is immense but you rarely hear it executed so exclusively well as in this case...more

Peace Creep- Peace Creep

With their brand new selftitled release Peace Creep from San Francisco will surely become your next favourite punk rock trio. The band draws inspiration from all kinds of rock styles and developed a unique and rough sound on a total of 6 tracks on this EP. It all starts with the incredible opener "Control Yr Crime" that moves with an intense pace through different moods. The punk rock character in Peace Creep's sound blends with all kinds of heavy rock genres and is probably what people should be talking about when they mention the term alternative punk rock. Tracks like "Radio Free Alcatraz" are building on great tensions that are often unloading in massive jams. It's an exciting brand of high energy rock'n'roll music that you should not sleep on....more

Leaf Peeper & Vesper Chimes - God's Country

Blending experimental ambient sounds and traditional folk motives Leaf Peeper & Vesper Chimes' new album "God's Country" is a perfect meeting of songwriter Matt Brown and Chicago duo Ethan Parcell and Hannah Bureau.

Mostly the aforementioned sounds represent a part of nature as they are unique field recordings that are certainly not always as peaceful and quiet as the coverart suggests. What is true though is the floating character of the tracks - more than everything else they are vibes and atmospheres; the grooves, guitars and vocals arise out of them and find themselves perfectly embedded. So "God's Country" is a journey through wide landscapes filled with melodies and calm moods.

Le Rex - Wild Man

Let me draw your attention to another great record released recently on Cuneiform Records. "Wild Man" is the third album by experimental brass group Le Rex from Switzerland and one that certainly doesn't brake with the label's exciting jazz tradition.

Consisting of drums, tuba, trombone, tuba, alto and tenor saxophone this group develops a highly unique and dynamic sound which reaches from experimental structures to hymn-like passages and uptempo brass groovers - and sometimes all put together in one track. Apparently a trip to Chicago influenced the group to this release drawing inspiration from the iconic Art Ensemble Of Chicago. The influences can be heard though there is certainly a very individual vibe going on in "Wild Man". Just take a tune like "Sugar Maple"; the grooving rythm patterns, the improvisations and the classical jazz arrangements form an exciting blend and truly progressive jazz music.

Mother Mars - Black Coffee And Good Advice

After the previous single "Claimed By The Cloner" here's another short retro rock teaser by Mother Mars before the upcoming full-length album.

"Black Coffee And Good Advice" is an uptempo and no-nonsense track in the Mother Mars tradition: Rumbling blues elements and heavy grooves. On the virtual flipside of this digital release you will find an instrumental jam featuring vibes that remind you of the band's side project Frozen Planet 69.

2. The Youngsters - Christmas In Jail
3. The Bionic I - Disco Claus
4. The Olympic Cyclone Band - Little Drummer Boy
5. Binky Griptite - Stone Soul Christmas

Julian Julien - Terre II

Blending photography and experimental music French saxophonist Julian Julien created a very cinematic jazz sound on his new album "Terre II". As the name suggests it is the successor to a similar project he did in 2000.

Julien worked with numerous international photographers and captured their motifs in very atmospheric tunes using innovative sound elements and developing progressive song structures. His collaborations from the musical perspective are Frédéric Collignon on trumpet, Siegfried Canto on flute, Rémi Dumoulin on clarinet and fellow sax player Michaël Havard. Although I didn't see all the pictures I can tell that they surely transmit a variety of moods and feelings that are expressed in dreamy tracks like "Iris V", dynamic ones like the title tune "Terre II" or dark grooves as in "Mr John Barry".

Soulbrotha feat. Beneficence & Kazi - Flow 'N Facts (Single)

As a first taste of Soulbrotha's upcoming album "The Golden Era Isn't Finished" they just released the first  throwback rap single "Flow N Facts" featuring rappers Beneficence and Kazi.

The producer duo from Hamburg consisting of DJ B-Base and DJ 12Finger Dan already collaborated with some of Hip Hop's greatest and if you've checked the names on the coveart above you will realize that they still do. So what can I tell you about this new track what the album's name doesn't already tell you? Flawless old school production and rappers you can trust - and there is no sign that the remaining tracks shouldn't be equally as dope.

The Milk - Favourite Worry

It's been a while since The Milk from London have released some new music - Now they are back with a stunning new album "Favourite Worry" on Wah Wah 45s which shows the band in a very soulful mood. From the great opener "Wonderlust" that equally moves through solid soul grooves and dramatic brass sections to smooth-as-butter tracks like "Lonelines Has Eyes" and the impressive climax in "Favourite Worry", this album is everything that a soul fan could wish for...more

Teej and Cuth - Seven Ages

British producer Cuth is once again part of a great hip hop duo after the relase  with his mate Adam earlier this year. The new record "Seven Ages" features rapper Teej who is equally up to the task of rhyming nicely over Cuth's original and soulful beats. There is an overall more serious vibe on this one which shows in Teej's lyrics and the dusty beats. But this certainly doesn't subtract the dynamics or the quality of their music. A track like "Boy Meets World" is an excellent example for great storytelling and original beatmaking...more

Pixel - Golden Years

"Golden Years" is the third album release by Pixel from Norway which appeared on Cuneiform Records (like so many other great albums these days). The quartet consists of double bassist and main vocalist Ellen Andrea Wang, drummer Jon Audun Baar, trumpeter Jonas Kilmork Vemøy, and Harald Lassen on saxophone. Just take the opener "Rainforest" which creates a perfect setting for the following tracks; a steady and grooving rhythm accompanied by soothing brass sounds playing beautiful harmonies. It is the composition of the tracks, how the pieces fit together, that make them special, like the following track "People Pleaser" whose vocal chorus could've easily ended up in any cheesy pop song - but the strong and lively jazz foundation transforms this element into something entirely different... more

Moon Curse -Spirit Remains

Only one song of the new Moon Curse album "Spirit Remains" is streaming currently on Bandcamp - But this one, the opener "Beneath The Waves", is all you need to get sucked into this band's vibes and to await the release of this record at the end of this month. It marks the second album by the trio from Milwaukee that again knows how to create slow moving and huge sonic monsters. This first single is a perfect prove of that point. Behind the big guitar sounds and stomping rhythms you will be able to find very melodic elements that are worked out nicely and well developed through the songs. "Spirit Remains" spans five songs - five deep and capturing trips into heavy iffs and melancholic melodies...more

BENJAMIN - Arriving

The Chicago-based label Cherries Records is lately releasing some nice funk and r&b records - and its hard to tell if they are either ignoring modern trends in soul music or if they are the very incarnation of them. The latest release features the BENJAMIN-duo and their new album "Arriving". The first single "Those Memories (Sneak Up On Me)" already dropped earlier this year and was a nice example for the synth-vibes and smooth production that you will find on the full-length record... more

Serious Beak - Ankaa

Another gem from the contemporary Australian heavy scene: Serious Beak's brand new instrumental masterpiece "Ankaa".

The three members of this band can also be found in regional groups like Squat Club, Hashshashin, Nyce Destroyer, Död, Jxckxlz, AM Frequencies, Kurushimi and the incredible Adrift for Days. "Ankaa" is a great mix of heavy riffs, polyrythmic elements and progressive song structures. In just a second this band will go from chaotic riffs to psychedelic moods and back again - all worked out nicely and transmitted through huge dynamics.

Anatoly Ice - Rhymes Are Muted

When I tell you that Anatoly Ice is a Beatmaker from Russia whose latest release is called "Rhymes Are Muted" you probably know exactly what you can expect. Maybe you still remember his remarkable soul collaboration with singer Dariya - now you can hear his works in an all instrumental outfit.

Though vocals or raps would be a good fit for most of the tracks they also make a pretty good and grooving impression on their own. This is a collection of carefully and well placed samples and a an impressive demonstration in beatmaking.

There is an overall more serious vibe on this one which shows in Teej's lyrics and the dusty beats. But this certainly doesn't subtract the dynamics or the quality of their music. A track like "Boy Meets World" is an excellent example for great storytelling and original beatmaking. There's a concept behind the tunes looking at life through the perspective of seven ages. Guest features on this album are provided by Kiran Harrison, Elemental and Cuth's former partner in crime Adam. If you're a fan of the traditional approach to the rap genre "Seven Ages" should definitely be on your list.

The first single "Those Memories (Sneak Up On Me)" already dropped earlier this year and was a nice example for the synth-vibes and smooth production that you will find on the full-length record. BENJAMIN's music is certainly a timeless approach that might have been the result of a collaboration between Leroy Hutson and Bootsy Collins. Clothed in a super clean and funky production this is one of the best and unique contemporary soul records you will find out there.

Abeokuta Afrobeat - Agô EP

For quite some time now Brazil has seem to be a hot bed for the worldwide expansion of the afrobeat tradition. The Abeokuta collective from Recife is another example for the excellent contributions coming from this part of the globe.

The group's brand new four-track EP is called "Agô" and features an explosive and dynamic approach. The title track and opener is an high speed afro groove with melodic brass sections and nice vocals while a tune like "Lessimí" is an exercise in slow and intense rhythms. The Putbacks - Kung Fu Pyramids / Snake Eyes

This is not the first time Melbourne's funk and soul collective The Putbacks is mentioned on this blog. Their ongoing  collaboration with Emma Donovan resulted in one of last year's finest soul records and now there is a brand new single on HopeStreet Records.

The name of this limited vinyl release is "Kung Fu Pyramids" and it is coming your way in an uptempo funk outfit with a driving guitar and haunting organ vibes. On the flipside you will find a very dynamic tune in "Snake Eyes" which is walking the line between solid soul grooves and psychedelic rock jams.

V./A. - Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party 3

You should never change a winning compilation series - and you should never stop putting some fresh and groovy vibes to your otherwise dusty and repeating collection of christmas tunes. Tramp Records' "Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party" series has just seen it's third installment which also marks the label's 50th full-length release.

Sean Delany and Jan Kohlmeyer compiled this new selection of seriously grooving christmas-themed songs. By now it should go without saying that when you see the Tramp logo you can expect high quality and rare records that you can hardly find anywhere else in the world. Just try Joe Shinall's opener "Sock it To 'em Santa" or any of the following tunes and you will be in a very special chistmas mood. Just imagine these tracks being played out there in the stores during Christmas shopping time - it wouldn't be a drag at all.

Pericopes +1 - These Human Beings

Pericopes is an acclaimed jazz duo from Italy/France consisting of saxophonist Emiliano Vernizzi and pianist Alessandro Sgobbio. The name Pericopes+1 under which their latest album "These Human Beings" was released refers to the addition of New York-based drummer Nick Wight.

On this new approach Wight adds a dynamic element to the lifely sounds of his fellow musicians. The songs on "These Human Beings", and you can really call them songs, follow clear structures and reach out to elements from various genres. Still there is no doubt that you're dealing with a jazz trio - one with very dynamic and progressive songwriting that leaves spaces for playful and melodic outings. Just take the rhythmic approach in "Jersey Zombies" or the shifting moods in the opener "Through Piat" for an example.

Kowloon Walled City - Grievances

San Francisco's Kowloon Walled City are back with another sublime record. After a number of great outputs including the fantastic "Container Ships"  the band finally releases new full-length album in "Grievances" on Neurot Recordings.

On seven new tracks you will be able to witness Kowloon Walled City's slow stomping rhythms, heavy guitars and desperate shouting vocals. But as always their music goes beyond the typical sludge standards and finds its intensity in dynamic structures with minimal instrumentation. The songs evolve out of these structures and sound very much alive despite their negative and threatening vibes.

Seedy Jeezus - Echoes In The Sky

You could already tell the quality and psychedelic influences of Melbourne's Seedy Jeezus on their heavy grooving S/T release earlier this year - now on the brand new single "Echoes In The Sky" they completely sold their soul to the psych-jam god.

As part of the band's European tour record they put this 16-minutes jam on vinyl. It's a dynamic and grooving jam that evolves slowly on a solid foundation. You probably shouldn't read too much in this kind of music because after all it is a bunch of guys just doing their thing while on the other hand this is the perfect backdrop for authentic and organic music - what more can you ask for?

Tour de Manège - Special Piano

As a music blogger you experience a few constants in the music world out there - One of those is the French producer collective "Tour De Manège" which is releasing solid jazz beats on a regular basis as can be witnessed on part I and II of their previous outputs.

As you can probably guess from the coverart above, this one is all about piano samples and the good old dusty beats. "Special Piano" is the first part of the new special series which features beatmakers Grand-Huit, GooMar, JIM, GuiB, James Cole, Saligo, Dee La Kream and SmokedBeat.

Hidden Jazz Quartett - Raw and Cooked (preview)

Although the name of Hanover's Hidden Jazz Quartett has already reverberated through the international music scene and featured in various compilations, there hasn't been an official release - this is about to change early next year with the group's debut "Raw And Cooked".

Based around mastermind Ral Zitzmann's visions this ensemble is playing a dynamic and original sound that is blending funk, jazz and soul elements. He gathered a truly talented gang of musicians and some terrific voices in Bajka, Greg Blackman, Omar and Anthony Joseph around him. Though the preview tracks only show a small part of the whole picture of this album, you can already tell that something great is coming your way with "Raw and Cooked" in mid January on Agogo records.

Willie West - I'm Still A Man (Lord Have Mercy)

Tomorrow will see the vinyl release of Willie West's single "I'm Still A Man (Lord Have Mercy)" on Timmion Records. The track is taken off the New Orleans soul legend's previous album "Lost Soul" from last year.

When you talk about a solid soul track you talk about a composition like this one. A repetitive guitar lick and West's great vocals make this tune a perfect example for the quality that can lurk behind apparently simple structures - the experience and passion of the man who already worked with The Meters and Allen Toussaint shines through.

Serpent - Master Of Ceremony

As a built up to their debut album in December the three piece band Serpent from Sweden released a first taste of rock'n'roll in "Master Of Ceremony".

While it is pretty easy to hear the band's influences in their sound, they are having their own way with the ancient Sabbath-style. Though it does not add a very experimental approach to the game, the Serpent sound is convincing in its straight-forwardness, riff-centered structure and hymn-like vocals - what's not to like in this?
The album "Nekromant" will be available just before Christmas with the above featured coverart.

The Jazz Jousters - The Vault (Best Of The Jazz Jousters)

After a huge amount of mostly digital releases the international beatmaker collective The Jazz Jousters present their very own best of collection in "The Vault".

Gadget, the main man behind the group selected 25 tracks by producers like Es-K, FloFilz, Pigeondust, Pawcut, Bones The Beat Head, Stay Classy, SmokedBeat, Dr MaD and many more. After the extensive location series they have really reached a point to celebrate - as you can hear on this new record.

Nat Birchall - Invocations

Not many artists carry the spiritual jazz tradition in modern times. Nat Birchall rose up to the challenge and released his latest album "Invocations" a few days ago on the brilliant Jazzman Records.

It marks his 6th record and contains five highly intense and authentic jazz tunes. The name "Invocations" speaks to the spiritual and soulful approach of the music which finds its colorful predecessors in Roland Kirk, John Coltrane or Albert Ayler. Despite the dynamics in most of the compositions there is a floating character to the vibes that rises and descents in powerful yet minimalistic arrangements.

Doctor Doom - This Seed We Have Sown

Don't let the cover art above mislead you - Doctor Doom from France might incorporate some retro doom elements in their sound but that is only one of the many features they borrowed from the 60s/70s rock era.

The new album "This Seed We Have Sown" was released on Ripple Music back in july and will get some vinyl treatment by STB Records at the end of this month. The band's sound might be rooted in a long gone era but it is what they make of it that makes this album so great. The original character of this approach lies in the way these rock elements are put together and authentically brought to your speakers. Driving heavy blues rhythms, stoner riffs, open song structures and splendid vocals make this album definitely one of the better rock releases this year has seen.

The Mouse Outfit & Mattic - Born Lupers (Vinyl)

The end of last year saw the release of the excellent "Born Lupers" album by production team/band The Mouse Outfit from Manchester and mc Mattic - now there will be a vinyl version available on Dusty Platter at the end of September.

The record features 8 vocal tracks and 4 instrumentals. The dynamic approach by The Mouse Outfit collective puts some very fresh vibes on this outstanding rap release. And there should be no doubts that Mattic is a master of his craft when he starts flowing. That makes a lot of reasons for a vinyl version and wether this is the first time you've heard about it or if it's already in your digital collection - support this release or just stream the tracks on Bandcamp.

Radare - Im Argen

Four years after releasing their last album "Hyrule" Radare from Wiesbaden are all set to drop their new and deeply moving new record "Im Argen" later this month.

Created by four guys playing drums, guitar, bass, keys, clarinet and trombone the five tracks on this album illustrate a minimalistic and yet very intense musical journey. Quiet soundscapes that seem to express an endless sadness characterize this highly cinematic approach. The floating nature of the music finds its beauty in the effective repetition of simple and haunting melodies. And there really is beauty on this album - it keeps lurking here and there between the depressive vibes and keeps building to a truly joyful and monumental climax in the final track "Distress".
